How to install a travel eSIM on iPhone

To install a travel eSIM on iPhone, connect to reliable internet, open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, and use the setup method supplied by the provider. A QR code is common, but Apple also supports carrier activation, setup links, provider apps, transfer, and manual entry. Installation is only the first half of the job. The travel line must also be selected and configured for data.

Do the compatibility and activation-policy checks before starting. Some plans begin their validity when installed, while others wait until the first connection to a supported network.

Before you install

Have these items ready:

• An eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked iPhone. Apple's current requirement starts with iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later, subject to regional exceptions.
• A stable Wi-Fi or hotspot connection. Apple notes that some eSIM-only models can activate without Wi-Fi in certain markets, but a reliable connection is still the safer setup environment.
• The provider's QR code, setup link, app, or manual SM-DP+ details.
• The package's activation policy and supported-network instructions.
• A second screen or printed copy if the QR code cannot be opened and scanned on the same phone.

Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. The entry should read No SIM Restrictions if you plan to use a travel provider different from the carrier that sold the phone. If it does not, use the carrier's official unlock process first.

Install with a QR code

If the provider supplied a QR code:

1. Open the Camera app and point it at the code.
2. Tap the Cellular Plan Detected notification.
3. Tap Continue, then Add Cellular Plan.
4. Enter a provider confirmation code if prompted.
5. Give the line a clear label such as Travel, Japan, or Europe.

Apple also allows a QR code shown in the default Mail app or browser to be added by touching and holding it on iOS 17.4 or later. Tap Add eSIM when the option appears. If that route is not available, display the code on another device and scan it.

Treat the QR code as private subscription information. Do not post it publicly or send it through an untrusted channel.

Install with a link, app, or manual details

A provider may send a setup link instead of an image. On a compatible version of iOS, open the link, allow the new eSIM, and follow the prompts. A provider app can offer a similar direct-install flow.

For manual installation:

1. Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data.
2. Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
3. Choose Enter Details Manually.
4. Enter the SM-DP+ address, activation code, and confirmation code exactly as supplied.

Do not guess a missing field. Return to the provider's official instructions or contact support. A single incorrect character can prevent the profile from downloading.

Choose the travel eSIM for data

After the profile appears in Settings:

1. Open Settings > Cellular.
2. Tap the new line and make sure Turn On This Line is enabled when you are ready to use it.
3. Return to Cellular Data and select the travel eSIM.
4. Turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off if you do not want the iPhone to fall back to the home line for data.
5. Open the travel line's settings and enable Data Roaming only when the provider's instructions require it. Most roaming travel profiles need this because they use partner networks.
6. Keep data roaming off on the home line unless the home carrier's roaming terms are intentional and understood.

The word roaming in the travel line's settings does not by itself mean a charge from the home carrier. It permits that selected profile to use a partner network. Charges depend on the plan attached to the active line.

Keep your home number without using its roaming data

A dual-SIM travel setup can keep the home line available for calls or texts while the travel eSIM supplies data. Label both lines before departure and review the defaults for voice, messages, and data.

Receiving or placing calls on the home line abroad may still create roaming charges. The safe data configuration is not a blanket guarantee that voice and SMS are free. Check the home carrier's terms, especially for incoming calls, voicemail, and Wi-Fi Calling.

Apple states that iMessage and FaceTime can continue to use the home line identity while a separate travel line supplies data. If iMessage prompts you to change a number, pause and review Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive rather than accepting a change without checking.

Install before departure or after arrival?

Installing before the trip gives you Wi-Fi, time, and access to support. It also lets you confirm that the profile appears in Cellular settings. The risk is starting a package early.

Use this rule:

• If validity starts on first connection in the coverage area, installation before departure is usually practical.
• If validity starts on installation, wait until the trip is close enough that no paid days are wasted.
• If the policy is unclear, ask the provider before installing.

Save the activation troubleshooting checklist offline before flying. Do not delete a profile that is stuck on Activating unless the provider confirms it can be downloaded again. Some activation codes are single use.

Test the setup without creating surprise charges

Before departure, verify that the travel line is listed, labeled, and turned off or on according to the provider's policy. At the destination:

1. Turn the travel line on.
2. Select it for cellular data.
3. Apply the provider's data-roaming and network-selection instructions.
4. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a small webpage.
5. Confirm the provider app or phone settings show data use on the intended line.

If there is no connection, work through the checklist in order. Confirm coverage and plan status first, then line selection, roaming, APN, network selection, Airplane Mode, and a restart. Randomly changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.
