# Travel eSIM not working? An activation checklist

> Diagnose a travel eSIM that will not install, activate, register, or pass data without deleting the profile or changing several settings at once.

When a travel eSIM is not working, first identify the failed stage: installation, package activation, network registration, or mobile data. Each stage has a different fix. Confirm one setting at a time and test after each change. Do not delete the eSIM unless the provider confirms that its activation code can be used again.

The shortest effective sequence is: check plan status and coverage, confirm the profile is on and selected for data, apply the provider's roaming and APN instructions, refresh the connection, then try a listed partner network.

## Identify the failure before changing settings

Use the phone's symptoms to choose a branch:

| Symptom | Likely stage to inspect |
| --- | --- |
| QR code rejected or plan cannot be added | Installation code, device support, carrier lock, or prior use |
| Profile appears but says Activating | Activation policy, destination, internet, or provider provisioning |
| Profile is on but shows no network | Coverage, roaming, network selection, or account status |
| Signal appears but webpages fail | Data-line selection, APN, allowance, or local outage |
| Data works on phone but not laptop | Hotspot permission, tethering APN, or hotspot settings |

Take a screenshot of the exact error and note when it appeared. A phrase such as unable to activate is more useful to support than a general report that the internet is broken.

## If the eSIM will not install

Confirm the phone passes the [compatibility checks](/guides/how-to-check-esim-compatibility): exact model, sales region, carrier lock, and provider support. Then check:

1. The phone has reliable Wi-Fi or another internet connection.
2. The QR code belongs to this order and has not already been installed on another device.
3. The code is complete, in focus, and not being scanned through an altered screenshot.
4. Manual details match the provider's instructions exactly.
5. The phone has room for another stored profile.
6. The operating system is current.

If the provider app says installed but no profile appears in SIM settings, stop repeating the download. Ask support to check the order and profile status. Repeated attempts can make a single-use activation code harder to diagnose.

## If the profile is stuck on Activating

A travel profile can be installed before its package is able to register. Some plans activate only inside their coverage area. Others require the provider to complete provisioning. Confirm the written activation policy and whether the phone has reached a supported destination.

Apple's current iPhone checklist starts with a working internet connection, an active carrier plan, and the latest supported iOS version. Apple then recommends toggling Airplane Mode, turning the line off and on, restarting, and checking carrier settings.

Do not leave the settings screen open and repeatedly reinstall the profile. Give the phone a few minutes to register after a change. If the status remains unchanged, collect the order ID, ICCID, EID, IMEI, and error text for the provider. Share those identifiers only through its private official support channel.

## If there is no signal

Check the basics in this order:

1. You are inside a country listed in the package coverage.
2. The package is active and has not expired.
3. The eSIM line is turned on.
4. Airplane Mode is off.
5. Data roaming is on for the travel line when the provider requires it.
6. Automatic network selection has been given time to register.
7. The location has usable partner-network coverage.

Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it off. If that does not help, turn the eSIM line off and on, then restart the phone. Nomad's current troubleshooting guide recommends the same connection refresh before moving to APN and manual network checks.

When automatic network selection fails, choose only a partner network named in the package instructions. A network visible in the scan is not necessarily available to the eSIM.

## If signal appears but data does not work

First turn Wi-Fi off. A Wi-Fi connection can make a phone appear online while hiding a failed cellular setup. Then confirm the travel eSIM is the selected mobile-data line. On a dual-SIM phone, turn automatic data switching off and consider temporarily disabling the home line.

Check the plan balance and fair-use status. A depleted fixed allowance or a reduced-speed unlimited plan can look like a technical fault. The [unlimited-plan guide](/guides/unlimited-esim-fair-usage) explains daily thresholds and resets.

Next, compare the APN with the provider's current instructions. Enter only the fields it supplies. Do not copy an APN from a forum or another destination plan. If the APN is correct, try the listed partner network manually. If 5G will not pass data, a provider may instruct you to try 4G/LTE while troubleshooting.

A VPN, private DNS app, firewall, or work profile can also interfere with testing. Temporarily disable only the relevant network tool, test, then restore it. Do not remove security software permanently to make a plan connect.

## If data works but the hotspot does not

Confirm that the package allows tethering. The phone can expose a hotspot control even when the plan restricts it. Turn the hotspot off, verify cellular data on the phone, then reconnect one device. Check for a separate tethering APN in the provider's official instructions.

The [hotspot guide](/guides/esim-hotspot-tethering) covers iPhone and Android setup, fair-use limits, and laptop background traffic.

## Use resets as a last resort

A network-settings reset can remove saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, VPN settings, and custom network configuration. Read the device manufacturer's current reset description before proceeding. Record the provider APN and other settings first.

A full factory reset is not a routine eSIM troubleshooting step. It creates a larger recovery problem and may remove profiles or device data. Use it only under direct manufacturer guidance with a verified backup.

## What to send support

A concise support request should include:

- Order or package ID.
- Destination and current location.
- Phone model, sales region, and operating-system version.
- ICCID for the installed eSIM.
- EID and IMEI when requested through a secure channel.
- Exact error message and screenshots.
- Whether the profile is installed, on, and selected for data.
- Whether roaming, APN, and a listed partner network were checked.
- The time of the last successful connection, if any.

Do not publish these identifiers in a review or open support thread.

## After the connection returns

Turn automatic network selection back on unless the provider says to keep a manual choice. Restore VPN or private DNS settings, re-enable the home line only after reviewing its roaming controls, and run a small data test. Note which change fixed the problem. That record is useful when the same profile crosses a border or is topped up later.
